TCP/IP addressing

Protocol     Set of rules to follow to have proper communication. Network protocols TCP/IP   (Department of defence)  IPx/SPx  (Novell) Appletalk(Apple) Netbios    (Microsoft) OSI          (ISO) What is TCP/IP? TCP/IP is a standard protocol used between computers and network devices for communication. Internet work based on TCP/IP. TCP/IP addressing IP address is logical address given to each and every device in the network. IP address used to identify specific device in the network. Two versions of IP: IP version 4  (32 bit) IPv4 IP version 6  (128 bit) IP address classifiaction Types of communication      In an IPv4 network, the hosts can communicate one of the three different ways. Unicast Broadcast Multicast 1. Unicast       The process of sending a packet from one host to all hosts in the network.                      2. Broadcast      The process of sending a packet from one host to all hosts in the network.

Network Devices

Basic Network devices which are used to build a network. Cisco switch                  Provides centralized location to connect devices with in the LAN. RJ45 cable LAN Network Cisco switch       Wireless access point       - Provides centralised location to connect devices with in the LAN.       - Without wire ( using RF signals) Wireless access point   Wireless LAN controller (WLC)     - Provides centralosed management of all acess points in the networks.    - Make it easier to manage large wireless scale deployments.    - Examples: Airports, shopping malls, Stores. Cisco Router            Device connecting two or more LAN. Cisco Firewall     - Protects a network from unauthorised access from outside.     - Controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on a set of rules. Cisco ASA firewall VoIP phones / Voice devices     - A VoIP phone uses Voice over IP for placing and transmitting telephone calls over an IP

Basic Knowledge of Networking

Whenever we think about network, first question comes in mind is "What is network?" so network is " A group of two or more computers connected to share information and resources. " Any resources like printer, scanner etc. Network Every network is divided in 3 types. 1) Local area network (LAN) 2) Metro-politan area network (MAN) 3) Wide area network (WAN) 1) Local area network (LAN)                 Set of devices connected with the same location (office/building) Local area network 2) Metro-politan area network (MAN)                                         Set of devices connected in city limits. Metro-politan area network (MAN) 3) Wide area network (WAN)       - Set of devices connected in two or more different locations.       - Two or more LAN or MAN. Wide area network (WAN) 4) Personal area network(PAN)             Two or more computer systems with in 4 to 6 meters. Personal area network(PAN)
